1987 in Columbia history:
- A mob of white students beat a black student, Mike Jones, and a couple of his friends outside Ferris Booth Hall. Black students mobilize on campus and take over Hamilton Hall. Professor Marcellus Blount is arrested during these protests. Protesters' demands led to the creation of the Intercultural Resource Center.
- The Philolexian Society declares war on Princeton
- Columbia College graduates its first co-ed class, which entered in 1983. Women quickly dominate: Linda Mischel and Ilaria Rebay are valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively
