The MS is the basic graduate degree in science although it has been adopted for other graduate fields that may require "technical" or at least "professional" competency (MS degrees are the basic certification awarded by the Journalism School, for example, and are the degree used by GSAPP's historic preservation program).

In English, it stands for Master of Science; in Latin, it stands for Magister Scientiæ.
