Joseph Bauke was a professor of Germanic languages and chairman of the German Department. He joined Columbia in 1959 and continued teaching until his untimely death, in 1983, at the age of 51. He was also the director of Deutsches Haus. In 1976, he received the Mark Van Doren Award, given annually by students. He was usually seen around campus in a finely tailored suit and tie. He endeared himself to his students with his charm and love of knowledge.
