- The University of Pennsylvania opened as an institution of higher education.
- 15 May: The "Rectors et al. of the Church of England" (i.e. Trinity Church) deeded five acres of land to "the Governors et al. of the College of the Province of New York," which would become Columbia's Park Place campus
