The Seven Sisters were seven prestigous women's colleges, sometimes considered to represent the Ivy League of women's colleges. Today, the term is sometimes still used to describe the remaining members. Those that are still women's colleges include Mount Holyoke, Wellesley, Smith, Bryn Mawr, and Barnard. Vassar went co-ed in 1969, and Radcliffe was a member before Harvard swallowed it.

When the Seven Sisters approach Lisa Simpson in her dream before a spelling bee in the episode "I'm Spelling as Fast as I Can", Barnard is presented as "Columbia's girl next door".

There is a London Underground station called Seven Sisters.
