The Columbia University Alumni Federation (CUAF) was an umbrella organization that encompassed the alumni associations of the individual schools, and was run by the Alumni Council. The Federation's primary activities included selecting nominees for election to the seats on the university Board of Trustees reserved for alumni, honors alumni from all schools with the conferral of the Alumni Medal at University Commencement, organizing an annual luncheon on the day of University Commencement, and providing service opportunities for Alumni through Columbia Alumni Volunteers.

The alumni federation was not an alumni association in its own right. It did not seek to develop a university-wide body of alumni and host events of its own. This was as a tremendous shortcoming in terms of Alumni Relations on the university-wide level, and ultimately led to its succession by the Columbia Alumni Association in June of 2005.
