Laundry is perhaps the toughest part of a student's life at Columbia.

Residence hall laundry rooms

Every residence hall has one or more laundry rooms. These are either located in the basement or one on each floor.

A single cycle on a single machine costs $1.25. Thus, to wash and dry a load of laundry costs a total of $2.50. This fee can be paid either less conveniently with quarters, or more conveniently with Flex points.

Watch out, these machines frequently malfunction and sometimes catch on fire.

Throughout the 2009-2010 academic year, Columbia has been replacing old laundry machines to more reliable and capable versions. They've also been upgrading the Flex machines; these now work (almost) flawlessly.

On-campus laundry services

There are also two on-campus laundry services -- Lion Laundry and Dormaid. The low-end prices are comparable, however Lion Laundry becomes considerably cheaper as the allotted poundage per week increases and supposedly Lion Laundry provides much larger bags. Both services professionally wash, dry, and fold the clothes off campus and then drop your laundry back off at your door.
