- The School of General Studies, the successor to University Extension, is created
- The football team hands Army its first loss in four years
- Nicholas Murray Butler, CC 1882 is awarded the first-ever Alexander Hamilton Medal, and then dies
- Columbia and neighboring institutions create "Morningside Heights, Inc.", an organization devoted to stopping white flight from Morningside Heights
