John McCain was a US Senator from Arizona who was the Republican nominee for the US Presidential Election of 2008. In the general election, McCain lost to Democrat Barack Obama.

His daughter, Meghan McCain, was in the Columbia College Class of 2007. His favorite thing about Columbia, apparently, was its proximity to Tom's.[1] In 2006, McCain was the keynote speaker of the College's Class Day.

Having attended Class Day the previous year, McCain must have assumed it was the only Columbia graduation ceremony he would have to attend in 2007. He was wrong. When his daughter Meghan informed him that he would have to stay for both her Class Day and for University Commencement, he reportedly exploded (according to the book Game Change, an account of the 2008 presidential election) "How many fucking times do I have to go to fucking New York this week? How many fucking times can you fucking graduate from fucking Columbia?"[2]
