1897 in Columbia history:
- Columbia and Barnard officially move to the new Morningside Heights campus
- Low Library and Milbank Hall, the first Barnard building on Morningside Heights, are completed
- The original Political Science Department splits between the Department of Public Law and Government and the History Department
- Alpha Omicron Pi is founded by four Barnard students: Elizabeth Heywood Wyman, Stella George Stern Perry, Jessie Wallace Hughan, and Helen St. Clair Mullan
