• Foundation of the all-female Barnard College when the trustees turn down President Barnard's proposal for a co-educational Columbia College. The initial Barnard facility is a townhouse, perhaps located where today's Rockefeller Center stands.
• President Barnard ends his 25-year tenure as Columbia president
