1973 in Columbia history:

• A new Columbia-Barnard Intercorporate Agreement is negotiated, allowing cross-registration between the two schools and mutual library use. This leads Barnard to develop programs with no counterpart at Columbia, including Urban Studies, Theater, and Dance, to lure Columbia students and the payment Columbia would have to provide if more of its students took Barnard classes than vice-versa. The agreement also gives Columbia control over the tenuring of Barnard faculty, a position which is only modified in 1983 as compensation for Columbia going co-ed.
• Tight Rope Walker is commissioned
• Columbia Club is dissolved

• June 5: Columbia's 119th Commencement, the first in 5 years not disrupted by student protests

• October 3: Gift of $6.5 million from the Fairchild Foundation permits start on new biology building on campus

• December 3: Martha Muse elected as first woman trustee
