1937 in Columbia history:
- September 23: Columbia College introduces a two-year sequence of undergraduate classes in the humanities: the required Humanities A (literature), precursor to Lit Hum, and Humanities B (art and music), which evolved into Art Hum and Music Hum
- Frank Fackenthal becomes provost, expanding the office's portfolio from summer programs to university-wide administration
