James Renwick
James Renwick CC 1807 was a scientist and valedictorian of his Columbia class. From 1820 to 1854 he served as a professor of physics and chemistry at Columbia. In between, he surveyed the Canadian border and wrote biographies, including one of DeWitt Clinton.
Renwick had also designed an ambitious 1813 scheme to expand the Columbia Park Place campus, but it was never realized. His son, James Renwick, Jr., also attended Columbia, and took after this one of his father's many trades, becoming an architect.
