Michael Mukasey
Michael Mukasey CC '63 is a white-collar criminal defense attorney best known for serving as Attorney General of the United States during the final year of President George W. Bush's administration, and as a judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1988-2006, including a term as Chief Judge of the district in his final six years. In addition to an extensive career in private practice, Mukasey served as an assistant federal prosecutor working under Rudy Giuliani.
While at Columbia, he was the op-ed page editor for the Spectator and friends with current Second Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jose Cabranes. Mukasey authored most of the Spectator coverage of the abolition of the Student Board in 1961.
Coincidentally, Mukasey was succeeded as Attorney General by fellow Columbia alum Eric Holder.
