Sandwich Ambassador
The Sandwich Ambassador is an at-large position on the Columbia College Student Council. It was conceived in 2014 when the editorial board of the Columbia Lion circulated a petition calling for a council position dedicated to issues of food accessibility, transparency in student government, and ending the $10 sandwich. The petition received over 600 signatures, resulting in a ballot initiative that passed with 88% of the vote.
The first Sandwich Ambassador was Joshua Burton, (CC'18), elected in September 2014. The second was Kaitlyn Loftus, (CC'17).
In the spring of 2015, CCSC debated getting rid of the position in constitutional review, in part due to its open-ended responsibilities. Instead, they created the Inclusion & Equity rep, whose responsibilities included addressing food insecurity. Around the same time, the Spectator Publishing Company released an app called Eat@CU, which provided discounts to several local restaurants the same way as the Sandwich Ambassador was supposed to. It never really caught on.
During the spring 2016 CCSC elections, Adil Mughal submitted his friend Ethan Wu's name as a joke candidate without his knowledge, allowing voters to choose between Wu, Jordan Mosely, and "None." A majority of voters chose "none," with Wu receiving the second-highest number of votes. Upon winning his election, Wu immediately resigned. As of April 8, the elections board has not announced how they plan to fill the position.
