Istvan Deak PhD '64 was the Seth Low Professor of History. Born in Hungary, he left in 1948 to study at the Sorbonne and subsequently worked as a journalist. He moved to New York City in 1956 to study at Columbia. He has since resarched and taught the history of East and Central Europe. He retired in 1997 but remains on campus as a special lecturer.
