Humanities A was a predecessor of the modern Lit Hum component of the Core Curriculum. It was developed by Mark Van Doren from its own predecessors, General Honors and the Colloquium on Important Books, and became a required yearlong course for Columbia College freshmen on September 23, 1937, along with Humanities B, which was meant to educate students in art and music.
