He is officially John Mitchell Mason Professor of the University and Provost Emeritus of the University and Dean Emeritus of Faculties. He served as Director of the Center for the Social Sciences from 1979 to 1987, Vice President for Arts and Sciences from 1987 to 1989, and Provost from 1987 to 2003.
