Jonathan Cole CC '64 PhD '69 is a professor in the Sociology Department and a former Provost.

He is officially John Mitchell Mason Professor of the University and Provost Emeritus of the University and Dean Emeritus of Faculties. He served as Director of the Center for the Social Sciences from 1979 to 1987, Vice President for Arts and Sciences from 1987 to 1989, and Provost from 1987 to 2003.

He received his BA in History before obtaining his PhD in Sociology with honors. From 1961 to 1964 he was on the varsity baseball team.
