Louis Simpson GS '48 MA '50 PhD '59 was a Jamaican poet who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1964. He came to the US specifically to attend Columbia, studying under Mark Van Doren, but his studies were cut short by World War II. He eventually returned to the university to complete his degree and continue on as a graduate student.
