Ann Douglas is the Parr Professor of Comparative Literature in the English Department. She is interested in 20th-century American literature, popular culture, race and ethnicity, and postcolonial theory. She is widely known for making the Beats an accepted part of Columbia's institutional culture, participating in Beat Night at the West End.

Before joining the Columbia faculty in 1974, she was the first female English professor at Princeton. Her education was at Harvard (BA, 1964, PhD, 1970) and Oxford (B.Phil, 1966). She has been the recipient of Columbia's Lionel Trilling Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship, among other honors.
