This page addresses Columbia's amazing Chinese language program as well as resources for students from and/or interested in China, Chinese culture, or the Chinese language.

Chinese language program (东亚语言文化系中文部)

Chinese at Colubia is taught under the aegis of the EALAC department. The faculty has occasionally been marred by disputes between those affiliated with Taiwan vs. those affiliated with mainland China.

Chinese organisations

Disclaimer: Some of the organisations listed here may not be "Chinese", depending on which side of the diplomatic / political table you sit. In the interests of inclusion, they are provided, though neither WikiCU nor the author holds any position as to whether Taiwan is considered "Chinese" or not.

In general, student organisations are split up in two categories: one, clubs for students from China studying overseas, mostly graduate students, and two, clubs for students of Chinese descent, mostly undergraduates.

CSC

The Chinese Students Club is a group dedicated to Chinese identity / culture / etc. Members need not be from China, though most are of Chinese descent.

CUCSSA

The Columbia University Chinese Students and Scholars Association: United for China's Peaceful Rising is a batshit insane organisation made up of students from China. They have been accused of being "an arm of the Chinese government" in the majority of content on their website are attacks on Falun Gong sourced from the Chinese government, and that up until last spring, their "Advisory Board" consisted solely of Chinese diplomats based at the Chinese Consulate and UN mission.

HKSSS

The Hong Kong Students and Scholars Society is an organisation dedicated to supporting Hong Kong students at Columbia. Though students need not have any affiliation whatsoever with Hong Kong to join, all members are from Hong Kong.

CUTSA

The Columbia University Taiwanese Student Association is comprised of students from Taiwan.

TASA

The Taiwanese American Students Association is a group dedicated to Taiwanese identity / culture / etc. Members need not be from Taiwan, though most are of Taiwanese descent.

AAA

The Asian American Alliance is a pan-Asian student-interest group that is politically active in stuff like multiculturalism and diversity and affirmative action. They endorsed the 2007 hunger strike.
