This page addresses Columbia's amazing Chinese language program as well as resources for students from and/or interested in China, Chinese culture, or the Chinese language.


Academic programs

Chinese language program (东亚语言文化系中文部)

Chinese at Colubia is taught under the aegis of the EALAC department. The faculty has occasionally been marred by disputes between those affiliated with Taiwan vs. those affiliated with mainland China.

Center on Chinese Education

This is a research center on Chinese education, ran mainly by professors and students on Economics of Education, and exchange scholars from various institutes in China.

TCSOL

This is a certificate program on Teaching Chinese.

Chinese organisations

AAA

The Asian American Alliance is a pan-Asian student-interest group that is politically active in stuff like multiculturalism and diversity and affirmative action. They endorsed the 2007 hunger strike.

Disclaimer: Some of the organisations listed here may not be "Chinese", depending on which side of the diplomatic / political table you sit. In the interests of inclusion, they are provided, though neither WikiCU nor the author holds any position as to whether Taiwan is considered "Chinese" or not.

In general, student organisations are split up in two categories: one, clubs for students from China studying overseas, mostly graduate students, and two, clubs for students of Chinese descent, mostly undergraduates.

The Chinese Students Club is a group dedicated to Chinese identity / culture / etc. Members need not be from China, though most are of Chinese descent.

CUASIA

Asia-Pacific Development Society (CUASIA) is a student organization affiliated with Columbia University. They creates international programs to promote cultural exchange between the citizens in the United States and those in the Asia-Pacific region.

CUCSSA

The Columbia University Chinese Students and Scholars Association: United for China's Peaceful Rising is a batshit insane organisation made up of students from China. They have been accused of being "an arm of the Chinese government" in the majority of content on their website are attacks on Falun Gong sourced from the Chinese government, and that up until last spring, their "Advisory Board" consisted solely of Chinese diplomats based at the Chinese Consulate and UN mission.

CUTSA

The Columbia University Taiwanese Student Association is comprised of students from Taiwan.

FCI

Future China Initiative seeks enlightenment of Chinese people, and to call for a rational formation of societal rules. Originally established by TC students, they are having students from different fields as board members.

GCI

Greater China Initiative, ran by SIPA students.

GCS

Greater China Society, ran by B-school students.

HKSSS

The Hong Kong Students and Scholars Society is an organisation dedicated to supporting Hong Kong students at Columbia. Though students need not have any affiliation whatsoever with Hong Kong to join. They are responsible for holding Columbia's annual Big-2 Tournament.

Jubilation!

This is a Christian a cappella group. Though not specified as Chinese group, a majority of its members are Chinese, all being Christians.

TASA

The Taiwanese American Students Association is a group dedicated to Taiwanese identity / culture / etc. Members need not be from Taiwan, though most are of Taiwanese descent.

TC Chinese Student Club

The TC Chinese Student Club was originally established in 1913. How it was evolving is unknown to the current board. It's name has been changed to TCCSSA in 2007, and will be changed back to TC Chinese Student Club in 2012. Acronym "TCCSB" is not preferred. Almost all members are Chinese students / alumni in TC.
