• Hartley and Wallach Halls are integrated into the Living and Learning Center
• Eric Kandel wins the Nobel Prize in Medicine
• Nonsequitur a capella group founded

Spring

• February 5: Dramatic Ruggles murder-suicide takes place, leaves two students dead
• May: Brian Dennehy speaks at Columbia College Class Day

Summer

• August: Richard Axel's patents, which generated $100 million a year for Columbia, expire

Fall

• Initiation of the First Year Run during NSOP
• New School of the Arts building is planned
• Two 10 Things I Hate About You cast members, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, are enrolled at age nineteen. Stiles as a year 13 and Gordon-Levitt as a university level.
