Humanities A was a predecessor of the modern Lit Hum component of the Core Curriculum. It was developed by Mark Van Doren from its own predecessor, John Erskine's General Honors class, and became a required yearlong course for Columbia College freshmen on September 23, 1937, along with Humanities B, which was meant to educate students in art and music.
