The Caroline Phelps Stokes Prize is "awarded to a student who has been a degree candidate for at least one academic year at Columbia College or Barnard College, and who has written the best essay on any topic concerning the rights of man." The topic to be selected in connection with course or seminar work and approved by the Stokes Prize Committee. It was established by the bequest of Caroline Phelps Stokes in 1910.
